
Stop the Chipping: Why We Preheat Glass
Cutting cold glass is basically a gamble. You score the surface, you apply pressure, and you just hope it breaks clean. But when the glass is too cold, it gets stubborn. The fracture jumps around, and you end up with those annoying chips or corner breakouts that ruin a perfectly good piece. We found a better way. Instead of fighting the glass, we warm it up using medium wave quartz infrared heaters before it ever touches the cutting head.
How it actually works
Here’s the thing: medium wave radiation is the “sweet spot.” It sinks into the glass better than short-wave options do. It gets the molecules vibrating, which makes the glass a bit more forgiving—almost like it’s relaxing. When you score glass that’s been preheated, the crack doesn’t wander. It follows your line exactly. The thermal energy basically cushions the blow of the mechanical cut, so you don’t get those jagged edges.
The gear you’ll need
We build our quartz tubes to handle some serious heat. The goal is a balanced wavelength—you want the core of the glass warm, but you don’t want the surface to overheat and warp. One thing to watch: your line speed. If your belt is flying, you’re going to need more wattage per centimeter to keep the temperature where it needs to be. We use high-purity quartz for the tubes because it doesn’t buckle under pressure. But you can’t just plug them in and walk away. You need a solid PID controller. If your temperature swings too much, you’re just adding new stress to the glass, which is the opposite of what we’re trying to do.
The trade-offs
Nothing is perfect. Heating the glass costs more in electricity, and it adds a step to your process. Plus, you have to think about what happens after the cut. If the glass stays too hot while your team is moving it, it’s way more likely to break by accident. You’ll need cooling fans that can bring the glass back to room temperature quickly, but gently. Too fast, and you’ll shock the glass. Too slow, and you’re just waiting around. It’s all about finding that balance.
