
Making Bathroom Heaters That Don’t Blind You
When we’re designing bathroom heating lamps, an IPX5 rating is basically the bare minimum. It just means the thing won’t fry the first time a stray jet of water hits it. But if you’re putting this in a home—especially one with babies—waterproofing is only half the battle. The real trick is dealing with the light. The glare problem Most short-wave infrared lamps are blinding. Seriously. They blast out a harsh light that’s just too much for sensitive eyes. To fix that, we use special coatings on the quartz glass. Think of it as a filter. It blocks out the aggressive visible light and UV rays but lets the actual heat slide right through. Instead of a spotlight that hurts to look at, you get a soft, warm glow. You still get all that cozy heat to dry off in a damp room, but without the headache. How it actually stays dry Getting that IPX5 rating takes more than just a plastic box. We use high-temp silicone gaskets and housings that fit together perfectly to keep the electronics bone-dry. Inside, we go with halogen-filled quartz tubes. We like halogen because it lets the filament run hotter without just giving up and burning out. It keeps the heat steady and reliable. The trade-offs Nothing is perfect. Because those filters protect your eyes, you lose a little bit of the light’s raw efficiency. It’s a small price to pay for safety, though. There’s also the heat itself. Since these units pump out a lot of concentrated warmth inside a sealed shell, the housing material has to be tough. If you use cheap stuff, it’ll warp or crack after a few weeks of heating up and cooling down. One last tip: if you’re wiring these into a high-humidity area, just double-check your circuit breakers. Halogen lamps have a bit of a “kick” when they first start up, so your electrical setup needs to be ready for that initial surge.
